TMJ and Jaw Disorders

Del Mar, CA

When it comes to TMJ disorders, nighttime clenching, and jaw pain the average person would probably see their dentist before any other doctor. That’s not a bad idea because once the baby ones are replaced, we’re stuck with what grows in (unless you’re fine with implants and dentures). Then what?

TMJ disorders aren’t often thought of as something chiropractic helps with, but it should be at the top of the list for several reasons. The upper cervical spine (the area at the top of your neck) and the jaw can be thought of as very close friends in a co-dependent relationship.

The upper cervical area consists of your head and the first two bones below called your atlas and axis (or C1 and C2). The jaw connects to your skull forming the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. The skull is made up of several plates that form zipper-like joints referred to as cranial sutures.

When stress hits the upper cervical spine, it’ll shift C1/C2 out of alignment causing dysfunction of the nerves and muscles in the surrounding area, including your TMJ/jaw. That misalignment can cause you to hurt, chew unevenly, and grind your teeth in your sleep. This leads to faulty movement of the TMJ itself and the cycle continues.

Car accidents, sports injuries, being punched in the face, eating something too hard or tough, and dental procedures can cause the TMJ to misalign (subluxate). If left untreated this eventually causes more discomfort and pain along with a slew of worsening problems.

At Health by the Sea, Dr. Fattie specializes in upper cervical, TMJ, and cranial realignment. Our detailed corrective care plans aim to resolve any biomechanical and nervous system dysfunction in order to achieve the long-lasting results you’re looking for.
